Want to Increase Your Chances of Landing Interviews? Instead Of Simply Applying, Consider Doing This Instead
Job openings typically attract hundreds of applicants.
There is simply no way for all of these applications to be reviewed. Most applications are simply parsed, stored in a database, and never looked at again — only a few will ever get discovered.
Referrals can help you get noticed. Having someone refer you for a job can give your application an advantage over others who don't have a referral. This means you're more likely to have your application looked at and considered.
As referrals increase your chances of getting an interview, here are 3 tips to get one -
1. Tap your existing network
The first thing to do is to reach out to people you already know like former classmates, current and past coworkers, family and friends. This shouldn’t be awkward as you already know them.
Tell them you're searching for a job and ask if they can help you by providing a referral or introducing you to someone who can.
2. Reach out to recruiters
You can use LinkedIn to contact the recruiter from the company you want to work for.
Recruiters are already searching for suitable candidates to fill job openings. You can tell them that you're interested in a position and highlight your skills that match the job requirements.
If the recruiter thinks you're a good fit, they may forward your resume along with a positive recommendation. This is way better than just submitting your application.
3. Attend Meetups
Many people complain that they don't have enough contacts to get a referral.
Attending career fairs, events or clubs is a good way to meet people who can help you find a job. It's important to be yourself and approach them in a genuine and friendly way.
After meeting them, wait for a week and then follow up with them about job opportunities.
Remember that having a referral doesn't mean you'll get the job, it just increases the chances of being considered for it.
